Dry Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1.5 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

Frosting Ingredients

  • 8 oz cream cheese for frosting
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter for frosting
  • 4 cups powdered sugar for frosting

Baking Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, beat eggs, then add vegetable oil, buttermilk, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar. Mix well.
  • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  • For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and mix until fluffy. Frost cooled cake layers and serve.
